Kumudini in front of her family home with her youngest brother

Kumudini's Story

I am 45 yrs old and the oldest of 11 children, in my family. I belong to a lower caste community in my village. My mother worked for some of the higher caste people in the same village. We have always been poor. There is never enough money and food to feed all of us. Most of my siblings are unable to work as they suffer from blindness or are deformed in their hands or legs. I can work. I work as a maid to support myself and my siblings. I never went go to school.

My Madam:

My madam is a good lady. But many days after my work, she doesn't give me my wages. She tells me to stay in their house. So I stay with her her and her daughter and her two grand children. Every day, I have to wake up early and start cooking for the day. The work is hard. First is breakfast preparation for the whole famliy. Then is lunch preparation and cooking the meals. Then it is time to prepare and cook for the many curries for dinner.  I work this way everyday including Sunday but with no money. My madam says that she is keeping my money.

Current need:

Everyday, I long to go back to my family. Our entire family lives in a small hut. But if I go back then the whole family cannot survive without my small income I sometimes get from my madam. I want to provide my family a regular income every month, so that my mother can cook food and my younger brother can go to school.
