The one-walled house

"We have been living in our little shack for the last 11 years. My 3 children were born here. Our shack only has one wall for my children, my husband and myself," says Jaseela.

Unfinished house:

"When the government gave us grants, we started to build a small brick house near our shack. Since the funds dried out, our house remains unfinished. We also don't have proper sanitary facilities for the children and I.

I would like to build a small cement house, with a bathroom, that can withstand the rain; a kitchen to cook rice and a place for the children to study.

Our greates need is the funds to finish our house would be a blessing for us and for our kids.

When the rain comes:

She says,"We all sleep on the floor. During the monsoon seasons the shack gets flooded with water and the wet floor makes it impossible for us to sleep during the night.

I put together pieces of left over fabric to over the floor to absorb the moisture.

We would like to have the money to buy some thick plastic sheets to cover our floors

Cooking is difficult during the monsoon season as there is no dry wood. I have no running water and have to walk a long distance to get water. I would also like to buy a small gas cooker to cook our food. Since my bicycle broke down, I cannot take my 4 year old daughter to kindergarten, so she stays with me at home."

Current Need:

We only have a few utensils, racks and mats. The children need school bags and books for school. I would also like to buy some floor mats to keep the water away at night. If I can buy a small gas cooker I can feed the children, as there is no fire wood during the monsoon seasons. I also want to buy my bicycle to take my daughter to kindergarten.

In the future, I want to finish building my home where my children can grow up." says Jaseela.

"The government funds have run out and the house remains unfinished."

"The children complain of back pain as they sit long hours on the floor to study."
